WHAT ARE ESSENTIAL OILS?

Essential oils have been used throughout history across all civilisations and cultures to heal our bodies, flavour our food and lift our emotional and spiritual states.

ESSENTIAL OILS ARE:
  • Pure extracts from plants (50-70 times more potent than herbs)
  • Extracted from the seeds, leaves, bark, resin, flowers, fruit, skin of plants
  • Nature’s defence mechanism for plants and cells – in other words, the immune system of the plant
  • Leverage our body’s ability to self-heal – treats the problem rather than masks symptoms
  • Provide a natural alternative to commonly used medicines
  • Can be complimentary to allopathic medicine

HOW CAN WE USE ESSENTIAL OILS?

  • Aromatically – diffuse or just inhale from the bottle
  • Topically – dilute and apply to the skin
  • Internally* - pop a drop under the tongue; add a few drops to an empty gel cap; add 1-2 drops to water

* Not all essential oils are safe for internal use-always read the bottle first and educate yourself with resources such as Modern Essentials. I only recommend dōTERRA oils for internal use. But remember: just because it’s natural doesn’t mean it’s safe (EG arsenic). Take special care with children or if pregnant/breastfeeding. Listen to your body and do what feels right for you. If it doesn’t feel right to take an essential oil internally even though a reliable resource written by experts recommends it, then don’t do it.

 

WHEN DO YOU USE ESSENTIAL OILS?

  • Reactively (eg: pain; cuts and scrapes)
  • Therapeutically (eg: massage, in a bath)
  • Prevention (eg: to boost immune system; this is the most powerful way of using essential oils)
  • Non-toxic cleaning, natural skin care and deodorants, air freshener, natural perfume + cologne, to enhance yoga practice, emotional support
  • Everyday- diffuse in bedroom and living spaces, cooking, use rollerbottles, take supplements
